Audiobook Reviews

Apparently, I’ve been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately! So I thought I’d do a couple of posts with some short reviews.

3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows – Ann Brashares

This is supposed to be Traveling Pants take 2. It’s about three friends, over the course of a summer. They have been drifting apart for a while, but this summer sends them in totally different directions, while bringing them back together at the same time.

The narrator was a little too old sounding on this book, since these girls were supposed to be young teens, but aside from that I didn’t mind her. The story, however, lacked for me. One of the main issues with this book was that it tried too hard to be the next Traveling Pants…the original four girls were mentioned several times in the book (it takes place in the same town) and a couple of the characters were even present in this book. Having these stories so closely connected, however, only served to remind me that 3 Willows was not Traveling Pants, and that it failed in comparison. The girls in this novel were not very good friends, which is what I loved about the original Sisterhood series. Perhaps if it was a totally separate book I would have enjoyed the characters more, but I found their lack of friendship annoying, and by the end I just didn’t care about them.

I Hunt Killers – Barry Lyga

The obvious recommendation of this book is for anyone who likes the show Dexter. This story is about the son of the world’s most notorious serial killer. He was raised by this father to become a serial killer, but he is determined not to fall into that world, even though he knows he has his own dark impulses. When a new serial killer appears in his home town, he decides to use his own knowledge of killing and killers, to help the police.

I loved this book. I used to really like Dexter, but the show has decreased in quality drastically for me over the last couple of seasons. Listening to this audiobook, however, reminded me exactly why I loved Dexter in the first place. The narrator was fine, and the characters were great. The story was so interesting, and it was not afraid to be dark, which I loved. I am looking forward to reading/listening the sequel at some point!
