What’s Up Wednesday

Hosted by Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk, this is a great way for writers to get together and keep in touch!

So what have I been up to?

My reading of Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s Marina got interrupted with Finn’s arrival, so I’ve picked it up again. I’m actually really bad for starting books and then taking, like, years to finish them, =P (I can leave books for a long period of time and then just pick them up again…in fact, several times this has been exactly what I needed to go from not enjoying a book to absolutely loving it! All about the mood, I guess.)

I finished my edits!! I have NEVER spent such a long time writing a story or editing one as this YA Fantasy. But now that I’ve finally finished the first-round edits, I feel like I’m standing in that far-off lit tunnel. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I actually feel like I’m getting somewhere at last, and that is great.

Normally I’d wait before diving back into round-two editing, but since it took such a long time to get through the first round, I need to start editing again right away so that I can ensure the novel is even throughout in terms of writing style and character/world development. So, it’s a bit of a 1.5 edit, I guess. But I’m going to try really hard to push through and edit at least a chapter a day, so that I get it all done in a shortish time frame.

Really what’s working for me right now is just setting my self daily goals. I don’t always do this, as I like to write/edit as inspiration or motivation sparks. But with this project, I have to keep myself going. Not that I’m not inspired or motivated…it’s just that for some reason, this project requires some extra discipline!

I went to the dentist last week and discovered that I have to get a root canal. I’m not too bothered by the procedure…I’m one of the weird ones that have always enjoyed going to the dentist (lay back in a chair, radio or t.v. on, and hey, it got me out of school as a kid, so what’s not to like?) I am, however, not too happy about the disruption it will bring to my day. But, it’s got to get done, and since the gum is infected and swollen (and painful!) already, I’ll be happy to get this taken care of!

That’s been my week. What have you been up to?

I agree that enjoying a book is based on mood. I always hate it when I know a book is good, but I just can't get into it because of how I'm feeling at the time. That's the reading boat I'm in lately.

Congrats on finishing your round of edits! I'm like you when it comes to writing as inspiration hits, but I'm finding the need to set goals for myself these days too. Some projects are just harder to get through or take more discipline, I guess!

Good luck with your next round of edits and with the root canal surgery! I had two dental surgeries last year, so I feel your pain. Have a super week! 🙂

Congrats on finishing a round of edits! Yay! I really have to agree with you about daily goals. I'm publicly setting a weekly goal, but I need to get back to setting a daily goal as well. I find my day timer is perfect for that kind of thing, but I've been a huge slacker lately.

Boo to the root canal. Sounds painful. Hope that goes well and does cause too much of a disruption. Have a great week, Mere! 😀
