What’s Up Wednesday

Hosted by Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk, this is a great way for writers to get together and keep in touch!

So what have I been up to?

WHAT I’M READING

I just finished reading George MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin, and now I’ve started on The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis. In the mood for classic children’s fantasy, I guess!

WHAT I’M WRITING

I got inspiration for a new MG fantasy story, which then also gave me an idea for a YA contemporary (funny where ideas take you, eh?) I’ve been focusing more on the YA for now, since the MG needs more thinking through to work out exactly where I want it to go.

And, on the editing front, my lonnnngggggg edits for my YA fantasy are drawing to a close! They are only the first-round edits, but I’ve been working on them for ages, so it’s pretty exciting.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

So, for about the last two months, I’ve spent a fair bit of time awake in the middle of the night, =) While baby is eating, my mind often starts going to my stories…this is actually a nice quiet time to brainstorm, which is quite useful. However, I don’t usually have my computer with me, and half the time I’m too tired to actually get into writing, anyways. But, I keep my phone with me during the nights (the flashlight makes a nicer light than the bright bedside lamp), so I’ve taken to making quick notes on the phone, which I can then refer to during the days.

I’m not sure it’s totally necessary for me to physically jot these late night thoughts down, as I usually remember mental notes okay, but it makes me feel productive, which lifts my writing spirits.

WHAT ELSE I’VE BEEN UP TO

Spending lots of time with my baby, and loving every minute of it. We’re just getting into the period of routine and predictability now, so I’ve been able to do more writing and other things around the house, too, which is awesome! I’ve even been able to start playing my clarinet again, which I’ve wanted to do since we moved. I really want my son and any other future children to grow up with music in the house, so I’m really pleased I’ve been able to start playing again. And finally we live in a detached house, so I’m not worried about bothering the neighbours!

That’s been my week. What have you been up to?

It's odd where inspiration takes you! I'm a night owl and do quite a bit of writing at night, too (though I have to note things down otherwise I'd forget them). Have a great week!

I didn't realize you'd had your baby! I looked back through your blog posts and saw the gorgeous photo you shared of him. He is absolutely precious, Mere. And I love the name you chose for him too.♥ That's fantastic that you're able to squeeze in writing with a new baby. (And all of the other things you like doing, like playing the clarinet.) Honestly, it kind of puts me to shame. I don't have a new baby, so what's my excuse for not writing? 😉 Hope you have a wonderful week! 😀

Best of luck with those edits – it sounds like you're making great progress! I've been jotting down notes on my phone too, but that's mainly because when I can't sleep I'm too lazy to find a notebook and pen.

    Have a lovely week!

Night time feeds sounds like a great time for inspiration ^_^ Sometimes all you need to do is muse and keep your brain ticking over.

Hooray for being super close to the end of the edits. Hooray! What a great feeling.

    Have a great week.

  5. I have a lot of great ideas at night but I never write them down and end up forgetting them by morning. You'd think I'd learn! So it's good that you jot the notes down on your phone.
Sounds like you're getting into a good routine with baby- for me a routine was a must with all four of my kids. 🙂
  6. Yay for baby! I'm going to be there soon enough, and I'm trying to figure out a solution to that late night brainstorming. I have a digital recorder I might use, if it wouldn't wake my hubby. We really just need a telepathic transcription device, eh?

Huge congratulations on the arrival of your baby!!! That's so exciting, and I'm happy to hear you're settling into a nice routine now. I'm amazed that you're getting writing related things done with all those new mom tasks! That's quite the juggling act!

I love George McDonald and C.S. Lewis too. Both are such great authors! Best of luck with your new mom adventure, your shiny new story ideas, and the soon to be done edits! 🙂

  8. Is it funny that I miss those days? No. I knew I would, even when I was back in them. It sounds like you are enjoying them, hard parts and all. Have a fantastic week!

My children have been begging me to read The Princess and the Goblin to them! We read an expert a few weeks ago and it totally sucked them in. Did you like it?
The Horse and His Boy is one of my favorites. So good.
    Enjoy your little one!
  10. Spending time with Baby is the Best!!!!
