What’s Up Wednesday

Hosted by Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk, this is a great way for writers to get together and keep in touch!

So what have I been up to?

Looking forward to starting Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafón soon, since it has finally arrived (I ordered it a couple of weeks ago, but the shipment got delayed). I’ve been waiting for this one to be translated for a while now, so I’m excited to finally have a copy of it in my hands!

Okay, so last week was fairly eventful (see below!), and I got behind on my writing. *Sigh* However, I’m not stressing myself out about it. I got about 5k behind in my goal, and for the time being I’m just continuing at my normal pace, 5k back (not trying to “catch up” right now). I am on vacation next week, so I’m hoping I might make up for some of the lost words then. But, even if I don’t, I’m still fairly happy with where I am right now, =)

We’ve been having some decidedly fall-like weather here (seriously, the weather station is calling it Augtober), and that always gets me in the mood to write. Cool temperatures, warm beverages, the crisp smell of the air, and the promise of the upcoming holiday season. I love Autumn, and since I probably won’t get much actual writing done this fall, it’s nice to revel in Augtober for a bit and enjoy the writing atmosphere while I can!

Okay, so remember how I said last week that I was hoping for a nice, calm stretch of time? Yeah, that definitely didn’t happen, =P

Wednesday afternoon I had a doctor’s appointment, and found out my fluids are a bit low, and baby is a bit small. Nothing to panic about, but I was instructed to take it easy, and I have another ultrasound to keep track of things next week.

Okay, so, taking it easy I thought I could do. But then Thursday morning, again at about 4:30, we had *another* bat in the bedroom o_o. This time my husband was home, so I put the covers over my head and he dealt with the situation! But it was clear that this was not a coincidence, so we called someone in, and they determined we probably had a colony of about 10-50 bats living in our walls.

So that was fun. $1200 later, we don’t even have the assurance that the bats are actually gone, just a hope that they’ve left (since they’re in the walls the professionals can’t actually get them out…they can just install one-way doors so when the bats go hunting at night, they can get out but can’t get back in). My husband also scoured our room and filled in every possible little crack in the walls we could find, since we’re fairly sure that’s where they were getting into the house from. Needless to say, however, I’ve barely slept for the last week. Every time we hear a noise, or the dog moves (he’s a great alarm for bats!) we both wake up, thinking there’s something in the room.

So, between needing to take it easy, dealing with that unexpected stress, and getting no sleep for several days in a row, I got behind on reading and writing this past week. (At least I have more vacation coming up! I can sleep easy during the day, if nothing else, =3)

Well, that’s been my week! What have you been up to?

I am jealous of your fall-like weather! It rained here for all of twelve minutes yesterday, which did cool off the day after that. (I guess. It was only 80* at 10 pm, so that's cool for this where I live at night in a summer month.) I really need to move to a cooler state again because I miss cozy writing sessions. Something about being bundled just helps with the sitting still for hours to write bit.

Oh my gosh, that's crazy about the bats! I really hope the problem is solved now because I can see how that would keep you up at night. I'm very jealous of your fall weather. Out here on the prairies it's been hot and muggy lately. Blah. Autumn is my favourite too and I'd be thrilled if it lasted all year. The temperature went down today, so hopefully that's a good sign that fall is on the way. Enjoy your vacation next week! I hope you get in lots of relaxation time (sounds like you could use it!) and words on your WIP! 🙂

Eek! The $1200 sounds at least as bad as the bat problem. I hope that fixed it! We're pretty fall like here in Maine too–in fact, I had to check to see where you were writing from. As long as winter doesn't come early, I'm good with it!

Yikes about the bats too! I hope they leave, don't come back, and aren't too pissed at you about it. 😉 Good luck with the 5k word count.

We had some Augtober weather and will probably see more, though there have been a few actual hot days mixed in. Take care of yourself and your fluids, and it's great to see you again!
