Writing a Montage

Okay, so I’ve been working a lot on this new project (two-thirds finished the first draft!!  Although I have a feeling the first edit is going to be just as much work as the original writing was, =/), and I noticed a curious thing yesterday…I was writing a montage.

So, montage’s are great.  In movies.  I can’t really think of books that have them, though. They might…in fact, they could have them all the time!  But I can’t think of any at the moment.

There’s a lot of action in this book…some is important, and takes a decent amount of time to describe.  But some just fits in with the nature of the book, and really doesn’t add anything to the plot (except that it fits with the nature of the book).  I like the action, but it would have been far too dragging to describe all of the action scenes in detail.  So I didn’t.  There is a section in the manuscript in which several things happen all in the manner of about two chapters.  It is, basically, a montage.

Now, aside from this being a perfect fit for a future film adaptation (o_o and if I’m going that far let’s pretend this film adaptation stars Alan Rickman, even though the main characters are all young, and the proper main character is a seventeen-year-old girl), I’m not sure how I feel about these scenes.  Are they pointless?  Do they happen too fast?  Or does it work with the flow of the rest of the story?

Likely, I’ll find out the answers to these questions and more when I go back over the draft to do some editing.  But it is an interesting concept, a novel-montage…and I have to say, by the end of writing it, I was really tired for the characters.  They went through an awful lot, in what seems a pretty short time.  They do have some rest coming up, though, so I think they’ll be just fine, =)

And now, because I feel like it, here is a video montage of horror movies.  What does this have to do with what I’ve just been talking about?  Pretty much nothing.  But I’ve been asking around for horror book recommendations lately, so…yes.  Enjoy.  Unless you don’t like horror movies.  Then you probably shouldn’t watch.
