Character Profiles – The Unlikable Likable Character

I missed Save-A-Word yesterday(!) Just a little too busy, =( But, I was thinking about what to write today, and the other day I became sort of “aware” of another character type, which I find very interesting. It’s the character who by all accounts should be unlikable, and yet is totally likable! I became aware of this whilst watching The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh. This is a fantastic film, and it comes from a fantastic series of stories. And one of the best (in my and my husband’s opinion) characters in this series is Eeyore, the most depressed creature probably ever in a children’s series! Seriously. If Eeyore actually existed,…

Character Profiles: The Character Who is Beautiful by Imperfection

This is a rather broad profile, and it can refer not only to the character who is loved/admired because of his/her imperfectness, but also to the character who is doing the loving/admiring of the imperfections. I have a big thing against “perfect” characters. You tend to see this a lot in romance novels, where the main character falls for someone who is pretty much perfect in every possible way. And another thing you often see is the main characters who are beautiful, but they don’t know it. Both of these drive me insane! I don’t even mind when main character loves character B and thinks character B is perfect (because…

Character Profiles: The Character Who Knows Nothing

In my character profile series, I talk about character-types in books (and sometimes movies) that I’ve noticed in my reading/watching, and how these types have affected my writing.  My first character-type was on the character who knows everything.  So, I thought I’d follow up with the character who knows nothing! This is the character who is clueless, OR the character that really resists and/or simply cannot take in what is going on around them.  Now, a curious thing about this character-type that I’ve noticed is that this is often the main character of a book.  And it’s a character-type that drives me insane. My favourite kinds of characters are the…

Character Profiles: The Character Who’s Allowed To Know Everything

I’ve decided I’m going to talk, here and there, about some character profiles I have noticed in books/movies. And I thought I would start with the character who is allowed to know everything. Now, I must make a clear distinction here…this is not the “know-it-all”, although sometimes I think these two character-types can overlap. But while know-it-alls think they know everything (and often annoy the muffins out of everyone else because of it), the character who is allowed to know everything actually does know everything, or nearly everything (and that’s okay). Why is this character important? Well, I think, particularly in sci-fi and fantasy genres, there are often things that…
